Campsite Review

Winding Hills Campground; Montgomery, NY

  • Date:  June 22, 2007
  • Length of stay:  One night

Unbeknownst to us, Montgomery NY is home to Orange County Choppers.  Traveling on Rte 84 across the southern part of New York State, we exited onto 17k following signs to Winding Hills Park.  It was my husband who spotted the familiar sight of the workshop and it dawned on us that we were in Orange county, home of OCC.  The park is beautiful.  Very rustic.  The sites have no water, just electric, so make sure you fill your water tanks before parking.  The fee was a flat $20, cash only and they do not take reservations.  The roads inside the park are paved and the sites are gravel.  Each site is very private; lots of trees.  There is a great playground for the kids and plenty of room to run the dogs on trails.  There are bathhouses, but they were pretty spotty.  But remember, you are camping.  This is to be expected.  If you arrive after the office closes at 7 pm, just find a site and they will catch up with you either that night or in the morning for payment.  We even had one of the workers drive around to sell us fire wood.  It is a quaint little campground.  You feel one with nature.  It sits on Diamond lake and they offer small boat rentals.  We would definitely go back either for one night or for a couple day getaway.

Getting back to OCC... on our way out of town we drove by their store front.  It was very cool.  Of course it was way to early for them to be open but it was neat to look through the windows anyway!
