Ginny Springs Outdoors, Campground & Dive Resort; High Springs, FL

  • Date:  February 17-19, 2007
  • Length of stay:  two nights

This is the camping trip where the Campfire Cozy was born and The Campfire Connection was ultimately created.  Friends of ours have enjoyed this campground for years, so a group of us decided to take a long weekend and go.  Located near the junction of I-75 and US-441 Ginny Springs is known for its diving facilities as well as its incredible rustic feel.  Each site offers water and electric hookups.  There are decent bathhouses sprinkled throughout.  This campground does not allow pets which was a weird feeling for us.  It was the first time camping without the dogs.  There is a dive shop on premises where you can rent or buy gear.  Other activities include hiking , canoeing, and tubing down the Santa Fe River.  There is also a playground for the kids which is great because the roads are gravel so it makes tricycle riding difficult.  It is truly a great place to camp... as long as the weather cooperates.  Who knew it gets well below freezing in Florida?  We certainly did not.  Thankfully, we had full propane tanks for the camper.  The kids were able to sleep in their bunks with the furnace running constantly.  But for us adults, we were remanded to the great outdoors to stay warm huddled around the fire (our camper is not conducive to entertaining while the two little ones sleep.. so it was either wake up the kids, or freeze!).  We literally put on every piece of clothing we could find.  We looked like quite the bunch.  We did enjoy what Ginny Springs has to offer but it will be a while before we go back as a family because of the pet restrictions.  It isn't cheap either... $17 per person, per night.  Plus if you want electric, there is a $6 surcharge each night per site.  But if you are looking for a great place to go diving or snorkel, it is definitely worth a trip.  That is the beauty of diving in a spring... the water temperature remains constant despite the cold air temps.  There is also the option of primitive camping which is much less expensive.
